East Athens

Overview

East Athens, also known as the Eastside, is one of the larger areas of Athens-Clarke County. This area begins once you cross the North Oconee River just past downtown Athens and College Station Road. This part of town has the most diverse offerings in property pricing and property types. There are great neighborhoods close in proximity to the University, numerous condo developments, and even some more rural feeling areas as you get into Barnett Shoals and Winterville which is considered its own area by some. East Athens has great shopping and restaurants along Gaines School Road along with other great amenities.

Area Hot Spots

East Athens seems to have its own version of many local hot spots. Jittery Joes, DePalma’s Italian Cafe, Blind Pig Tavern, Mama’s Boy on Oak Street, and Cali N Tito’s on Cedar Shoals are known for their cuisine and kid-friendly atmosphere. Being close to the university and North Oconee River makes this part of town ideal for students, UGA staff, and really any home buyer.

Schools and Neighborhoods

Because this area includes so many different neighborhoods, zoning can vary for schools. It is typical to see zoning for Whit Davis Elementary, Gaines School Road, and Hilsman Middle School. There are so many great neighborhoods with many of them built in the 50s, 60s and 70s. University Heights, Cedar Shoals, and Green Acres are three great examples. However, there are good places to find a condo at Georgetown, Ansonborough, Whitehall Mill Lofts, or the Seasons. Lastly, there is Winterville, GA which is its own municipality inside of Clarke County.
