Overview

Downtown Athens is a point of pride for the city and is well known across Georgia and the Southeast for its vibrant feel, local shopping, great restaurants, and numerous venues for live music. The entrance to UGA’s North Campus is located at the Arch in downtown which keeps all the venues full of residents and students during the day and night. During the football season, UGA fans and alumni often pack the area to enjoy all it has to offer.

Area Hot Spots

Downtown Athens is full of shopping, bars, and restaurants and there are many popular places for people of all ages. When it comes to restaurants, Last Resort Grill remains a fixture on Clayton Street, but there are so many more. Five Bar, Porterhouse Grille, The National, Trapeze, Pauly’s Crepe Bar, DePalma’s, and South Kitchen are other great places to visit for dinner. Lastly, you can’t mention downtown Athens without thinking about the Georgia Theater and the 40-Watt club where numerous bands have taken the stage over the years.

Schools and Neighborhoods

Zoning for schools can vary in this area between Barrow Elementary and Howard B. Stroud. Downtown Athens has many condo developments like The Georgian, Cotton Exchange, Gameday Condos, and University Towers. Most residents tend to be students, but there are residential neighborhoods in the area as well. Pulaski Heights, Chicopee Dudley, MLK Parkway, New Town, and the Cottages at Hilltop are a few of the areas with residential homes.
